I understand you are visiting this site and reading these words in order to find some clues… some inspiration… some guidance… some wisdom… perhaps. So I will honour you today by sharing with you some thoughts around the sense of feeling a little adrift, or lost, in life.
Lost is an uncomfortable place to be. But what exactly is this sense of lost-ness that is experienced? I mean if you are in the jungle, your guide has deserted you and you have no map and no compass then that is a little scary. If it is your first time in the jungle then you may well be justified in imagining that you will never see home again. You are truly lost.
We are not talking here of being lost in relation to time, space and topography. We mean something much deeper, much more real, and much more important; but the feeling feels just like the threat of annihilation that we might experience when lost and alone in a jungle full of dangerous animals and poisonous plants.
This ‘lost’ is a feeling place where love is missing and the heart feels empty. This is worse than the jungle, because in the jungle your natural, primitive, survival instincts can help you. Here you have nothing because when you look inside there is an emptiness that aches, that yearns to be filled with meaning and purpose and a deep sense of desiring to know who and what you truly are.
Why do so many feel this way at this time?
First and foremost you are a Spiritual Being. Your life has meaning. Your life has purpose.
What seems to be the cruel joke played on you by The Universe is that you have no idea what your purpose is, or if you have an inkling you can see no way of achieving it. A bit like taking a child from a poor family into the most wonderful toyshop and showing him all the amazing and wonderful gifts there are and allowing him to watch demonstrations in this magical place and then telling him, sorry, you’re just not good enough to have any of these.
But you are not completely discouraged. If you were, you wouldn’t be reading this magazine. You are still searching, still seeking.
So I will give you a Big Clue. Your primary purpose is to be yourself without apology.
Is that too easy? Just think about how often you modify your behaviour to the point where you are doing something you don’t really want to do because it will raise you up in the eyes of others. Think about the effect that your imagined thoughts about the thoughts that others think of you have on your behaviour. You are a social animal.
You are constrained by the rules, implied or legislated, that society places upon you. You are discouraged from being yourself – from the day you walk into school for the very first time wearing identical clothing to everyone else. You are taught for the comfort of the educational system not your personal comfort. You are measured against the standards that others are achieving and you are found wanting. You are not measured against yourself. If you are not scoring well, you are treated differently from those who are achieving.
Just imagine what life would be like if, instead of being considered faulty, those who did not perform brilliantly were recognised as being bored and then taught something that fascinated them. Fascination is what teaches. Curiosity is what drives excellence.
You were distracted from being who you truly are. That’s why you found yourself not knowing where you are or how you got here.
So initially, go back to those things that you have a curiosity about and explore them – but do not take advice from another. Make your own choices, based on what feels good to you. Do not ask another how well you are doing, for they will find fault where there is none.
Above all be yourself as perfectly as you know how. And if you don’t know who you are, then be a person who does not know who they are to the very best of your ability. In doing so you will discover how to Be. And in discovering how to Be, you may discover who you truly are.
With Love,
